Madonna has finally revealed the title of her new album and, contrary to rumor, it's not Magic.
In a minute-long video on her socials on Sunday, Madonna confirmed that the album is called Madame X, which she first hinted at on Saturday when she posted a note saying, "Madame X is a secret agent,
traveling around the world, changing identities, fighting for freedom, bringing light to dark places."
The note also described a long list of things that Madame X "is" -- including "a professor," "an equestrian," "a professor," "a saint" and "a prostitute."
In the video, we hear a snippet of a song in which Madonna sings, "The thing that hurt the most/Was that I wasn't lost." We then hear her say, "I decided to call my record Madame X." Then, over a montage of Madonna in a variety of costumes, hairstyles and makeup, she says, "Madame X is a secret agent. I am Madame X."
She then repeats the part about the character being a secret agent traveling around the world, and then says, "Madame X is a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother, a child, a teacher, a nun, a singer, a saint, a whore...and a spy in the house of love. I'm Madame X."
A Spy in the House of Love is the title of a famous 1954 novel by Anaïs Nin, and it's about Sabina, "a woman who dares to enjoy the sexual [freedom] that men have always known...wearing extravagant outfits and playing dangerous games of desire." It's no wonder Madonna identifies with the book.
No release date for the album yet.
